GAIN FREEDOM

Recent research suggests that small changes yield big results.  But let’s face it, change is HARD and it requires genuine motivation and effort no matter the size of the goal. What happens when motivation falls to the side line?  Because the one thing we can count on is that  life will continue to happen and steer us off course…the dog gets sick, the kids need you, or you go on a vacation.  Consider the following framework to help you reach and sustain your goals:

1. Know Your Why (and Make it Compelling): Your why should be strong enough to encourage you to take action day after day.  Having the goal of more energy might not sustain long-term change, but the prospect of a not being able to go on a bucket list adventure  or visit your kids at college could be a powerful motivator.

2. Constantly Remind Yourself of Your Goals: Whether it's posting more energy goals on the refrigerator or placing reminders where you'll see them daily, keep your why in focus to avoid losing sight of your dreams.

3. Simplify Your Habits: Make it easy to follow through on your habits. Eliminate electronics in your bedroom if you aim for more sleep. Purge junk food if you are aiming for a healthier diet.  Removing temptations rather than resisting them can be a game-changer.

4. Get an Accountability Partner: Just like teachers held us accountable in school, having someone to watch your back and provide positive yet tough support is crucial in achieving your goals. And let me say this-it should NOT be your partner in life. That’s  a sure fire way to cause relationship issues.  Our partner is simply meant to love on us.

5. Weekly Progress Review: Take the time to reflect on your actions weekly. Without reflection, progress stagnates. Regularly review your journey to make appropriate corrections. Give yourself grace if things don’t go exactly as planned and start over the next week. Each day is a new opportunity to practice habits that support your goals and learn a little more about yourself.
