On a Personal Note

“There's a fire in the open space behind us and the wind is pushing it our way. I don't think our homes are going to make it.”

I couldn't believe it.  Just 2 years ago our family lost almost everything we owned due to black mold exposure/toxicity.  It permeated everything porous; couches, beds, stuffed animals, homework, photos and so much more.

To phrase my favorite movie, “It wasn't over, it still isn't over." Bonus points for naming this movie!

We were immediately engulfed in a deep sense of anxiety, sadness, and hopelessness. Greg and I couldn't believe we were about to lose everything AGAIN.

We sat down at a restaurant, ordered a cocktail and spent the next 30 minutes going from one to the other simply saying what we were grateful for-our kids were with us along with our favorite fuzzy socks, our dog was safe, and so much more. Taking a few moments during this incredibly stressful event reframed how we saw the situation, taught us to appreciate all that we had, and made it more than enough. We began to tear up, hold hands across the table, and smile!

In the words of Victor Frankl,“ Forces beyond your control can take everything you possess except one thing ,your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation.

As we kick off the holiday season, I encourage you to take a beat and harness your superpower…GRATITUDE. It's a practice that takes mere minutes, yet it's an absolute game changer when it comes to your mental and physical health.

Side note: Although the fire came precariously close to our home, the wind took it in another direction and no homes were lost!

In health,
